A compound of formula: <IMAGE> (I) wherein: x is oxygen, sulphur or an -NR-group, wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkyl group; R1 is hydrogen or a C1-C6 alkyl, a C1-C6 alkoxy, an - SO2Cl or - SO2NR4R5 group wherein R4 and R5, which may be identical or different, are hydrogen, a C1-C12 alkyl or C2-C4 hydroxyalkyl group, or R1 is an -SO3H or -SO3(-)M(+)group wherein M is potassium or sodium or an N(R6)4(+)group, wherein each R6, which may be identical or different, is hydrogen, a C1-C6 alkyl or C2-C4 hydroxyalkyl group; R2 is hydrogen, a C1-C6 alkyl or C1-C6 alkoxy group, or R1 and R2 together are a methylenedioxy group; R3 is hydrogen or an -SO3H, -SO3(-)M(+)or -SO2NR4R5 group wherein M, R4 and R5, which may be the identical or different to the M, R4 and R5 groups respectively above, have the same meanings as above is useful in cosmetics for protection against ultra-violet rays.
