The invention relates to substituted phenylbarbituric acids of the formula <IMAGE> I wherein R1 and R3, independently, are lower-alkoxy or lower-alkylthio; R2 is lower-alkoxy, hydroxy or amino; and R4 is hydrogen; or R1 and R2 are lower-alkoxy, R3 is hydrogen and R4 is lower-alkyl, which are prepared from correspondingly substituted benzene derivatives and alloxan. The compounds of formula I can be converted into substituted benzaldehydes which in turn are known intermediates in the preparation of pharmaceutically valuable benzylpyrimidines.
