PURPOSE:To prevent degradation of quality for display without causing change of thickness of a liquid crystal cell in an evacuating stage by applying force directing two directions vertical to a substrate of liquid crystals and directing oppositely to each other wherein at least once the application of the force is performed during a drying stage. CONSTITUTION:Force causing no expansion of cell thickness due to the pressure difference and being uniform within a range of the cell surface is applied to a substrate of a liquid crystal cell at the stage of initiating evacuation for vacuum drying from directions vertical to a cell substrate and directing oppositely to each other to prevent thus the change of the cell thickness. For example, the liquid crystal cell 1 is set in the inside of a pressing jig 2. After fixing the cell with a plate 3 and 4 having sufficient precision of plane, from above and below using torque screws 5, the cell is evacuated with a vacuum pump 9 until the degree of vacuum 8 in the cell attains 1X10<4>Torr. At the same time, the cell is heated with a heater 6 to maintain the temp. at >=120 deg.C. Thus, the adsorbed water in the inside of the liquid crystal cell 1 is removed.
