PURPOSE:To facilitate the production of a quartz laser glass containing a large amount of trivalent cerium ion by forming a gel from alkyl silicate, silica fine particles and cerium dopant, as major components, by the sol-gel method and forming glass from the gel with heat under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A starting material containing, at least, an alkyl silicate such as ethyl silicate, silica fine particles and a dopant containing cerium (such as cerous chloride is subjected to the sol-gel process to form a dry gel. The dry gel is heated under reduced pressure, or in an inert gas atmosphere such as He, Ar or N2, in a hydrogen atmosphere or in a reductive gas atmosphere such as CO or H2S to form a glass. This process enables the production of a laser glass of high output and efficiency which is applicable to a wave-length variable laser or a slug laser for high output.
