The damage to hair during bleaching and dyeing with compounds yielding active oxygen, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, melamine perhydrate, percarbamide, perborates and persulphates, is reduced by treating it with a compound of the formula <FORM:0990660/D1-D2/1> in which X is -OH or -NH2, R1 is an aryl radical, an aliphatic radical with 1-5 carbon atoms or the radical <FORM:0990660/D1-D2/2> and R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals with 1-5 carbon atoms, or a water-soluble salt thereof, e.g, the sodium, potassium, ammonium or ethanolamine salts. The compound which may be applied to the hair before or during bleaching or dyeing as a solution, gel, cream, powder or paste, may also contain perfume oils, oxidation dyestuffs, thickeners, e.g. cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylates, olginates and fatty alcohols, and anionic, cationic or nonionic wetting agents, e.g. fatty alcohol sulphates, alkyl sulphonates and condensation products of fatty alcohols with ethylene oxide in which the alkyl residues contain 12-18 carbon atoms, alkylbenzene sulphates and alkylpyridinium salts. The treating composition preferably contains 0.01-10% by weight of the phosphorus-containing compound. |
