PURPOSE:To permit emission of linearly polarized light at every picture element and respectively independent control of luminances and the angle of polarization of the linearly polarized exit light by combining plural units installed with polarized light modulators in front of a light source which is variable in the quantity of light. CONSTITUTION:A TN type liquid crystal plate 13 is so installed that the axis of polarization of a polarizing filter 12 and the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules on the incident side (polarizing filter side) of the TN type liquid crystal plate 13 align to each other. The light emitted from the light source 1 which is variable in the quantity of light is entered as the linearly polarized light parallel with the axis of polarization of the filter 12 to the TN type liquid crystal plate 13. The TN type liquid crystal plate rotates the axis of polarization of the linearly polarized light having the axis of polarization parallel with the major axis of the liquid crystal molecules on the incident side by a voltage impressed to the electrode of the liquid crystal plate when the polarized light mentioned above is entered to said plate. The linearly polarized light having the desired intensity and direction of the axis of polarization is obtd. by controlling the intensity of the exit light of the light source 11 which is variable in the quantity of light and the voltage to be impressed to the electrode of the liquid crystal plate 13 in such a manner. |
