PURPOSE:To reduce a ROM capacity, by a method wherein a compression pattern is formed by adding an odd-numbered dot and an even-numbered dot which are adjacent in a direction that continuous dots are thinned out to be compressed in a dot matrix forming a character. CONSTITUTION:Kanji pattern data columns g1-g24 are rotated counterclockwise each at an angle of 90 deg. in a Kanji pattern rotating circuit 3 to turn to data rows g24-g1. The data rows g24-g1 are separately stored in the corresponding addresses of a register 4, thereby turning to Kanji pattern data a1-a24 and being inputted in a crosswise thinning-out and compressing circuit 5. Here, the Kanji pattern data a1 and a2 are compared with each other. If the both are '1', the Kanji pattern data a2 is set to '0'. In a similar manner, the Kanji pattern data a1-a24 are compared successively by the adjacent two data to be thinned out crosswise. After that, the odd- and even-numbered Kanji pattern data are ORed to be compressed crosswise to Kanji pattern data b1-b12 to be stored in a register 7.
