PURPOSE:To stably produce a carbon material having high density and strength and excellent quality at a low cost, by carbonizing a carbonaceous molded article containing carbonizable substance while constraining the circumference of the molded article. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous molded article containing carbonizable substance is carbonized while constraining the circumference of the article. The material to constrain the circumference of the article not necessarily has a strength up to high-temperature but is necessary to have a gas permeability to enable free dissipation of gas generated in the carbonization process. Tapes of paper, cloth, heat-resistant resin, ceramics, carbon fiber, etc., are preferable as the constraining material because the material is easily available at a low cost and easily applicable to constraining operation (winding operation). Another preferable method for constraining the carbonaceous molded article is insertion of the molded article into a vessel made of steel, cast iron, carbon or ceramic having a size slightly larger than the molded article and furnished with a proper ventilation hole. |
