PURPOSE:To obtain the title catalyst ingredient which provides stereoregular polymers in a high yield, by crushing a reaction product of Mg powder, alkyl monohalide and dialkoxymagnesium together with a diester of phthalic acid and contacting it with TiCl4. CONSTITUTION:Metallic Mg powder is reacted with an alkyl monohalide (e.g. n-butyl chloride) twice as much moles in the presence of dialkylmagnesium (e.g. diethoxymagnesium). The resulting reaction product is crushed together with a diester of phthalic acid (e.g. dibutyl phthalate). The resulting product is contacted with titanium tetrachloride to give the object solid catalyst ingredient for the polymerization of olefins. This solid catalyst ingredient, in combination with an organoaluminum compound (e.g. triethylaluminum), is used as a catalyst for the polymerization of olefins such as propylene.
