The invention relates to a process making it possible to reproduce any colour using the juxtaposition of coloured surfaces which are indistinguishable to the naked eye or alternatively of the direct mixture of paint or opaque pigments by using eight synthetic colours. This process is applicable to the reproduction of numerically encoded images, as a aid both for printing techniques and for wallpaper (wall coverings). The synthesis of the colours may then not require metering. The process uses the physical definition of the colour which is to be reproduced, and, using a calculation - which may be performed using a microprocessor in the case of image reproduction - makes it possible to allocate one surface portion, or a mixture proportion to each of the synthetic colours.
