PURPOSE:To obtain a memory element being erasable and having extremely high density and capacity for recording by forming the element from a Langmuir-Blodgett's (LB) film of molecules of a compd. which change its absorption spectra for polarized light reversibly by being isomerized by the irradiation of two kinds of light having different wavelength to each other. CONSTITUTION:The photochromic memory element of this invention comprises a Langmuir-Blodgett's (LB) film of molecules of a compd. which change its absorption spectra for polarized light reversibly by being isomerized by the irradiation of two kinds of light having different wavelength to each other. Thus, an element functioning as memory by the change of absorption spectra for polarized light is obtd utilizing a photochromic LB film. By this method, an erasable memory capable of recording at high density and with high recording capacity is obtd.
