PURPOSE:To obtain a beta-type Si3N4 whisker having a long-and well-grown fiber length by heating amixture composed of silica, carbon and cryolite at a relatively low temp. in a mixed atmosphere of N2 and NH3. CONSTITUTION:A mixer composed of silica, carbon and cryolite at a molar ratio of 1:(2-10):(1/12-1/4) is heated to react at 1,250-1,450 deg.C in a mixed atmosphere of (N2+NH3) added with NH3 at a molar ratio of <=1/5 with respect to N2. A beta-type Si3N4 whisker having a long-and well-grown fiber length is obtd. at a relatively low temp. |
