PURPOSE:To provide the title polymerization inhibitor which is excellent in the effect of inhibiting the polymerization of a vinyl compd. and the handleability and is free from the problem with respect to environmental sanitation, which comprises, as an active ingredient, an alkylated quinone compd. free from sulfur in its molecule. CONSTITUTION:A quinone compd., such as a benzoquinone compd., a naphthoquinone compd. or an anthraquinone compd., is alkylated to prepare an alkylated quinone compd. free from nitrogen and sulfur in its molecule. This quinone compd. is used as a polymerization inhibitor for a vinyl compd. (e.g., styrene or acrylic acid). Pref. examples of the alkylated quinone compd. include 4,7-di-tert-butyl-1,2-naphthoquinone and 1-tert-butyl-9,10-phenanthroqui none. These quinone compds. are preferable from the viewpoint of handleability because they have high solubility in the vinyl compd.
