PURPOSE:To safely and easily obtain a linear poly(2,5-thiophene), by reacting thiophene with a specific alkali metal compound in an organic solvent in the absence of water and reacting the reaction product with a 2,5-dihalogenated thiophene. CONSTITUTION:A linear poly(2,5-thiophene) can be produced by reacting (A) thiophene with (B) 2-2.2 equivalent of an alkali metal compound of formula R.M (R is alkyl, phenyl, alkyl-substituted phenyl or dialkylamino; M is alkali metal) and reacting the reaction product with (C) a 2,5-dihalogenated thiophene. The reactions are carried out in an organic solvent (e.g. ethyl ether) essentially in the absence of water. The amount of the component C is nearly equivalent to the component A.
