PURPOSE:To safely and easily produce the titled polymer having high molecular weight without using a catalyst, by reacting a dihalogenated thiophene with a specific alkali metal compound in an organic solvent in the absence of water. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be produced by reacting a 2,5- dihalogenated thiophene with an alkali metal compound of formula R.M (R is alkyl, phenyl or alkyl-substituted phenyl; M is alkali metal) (preferably n- butyllithium) in an organic solvent (preferably ether solvent) essentially in the absence of water. The amount of the alkali metal compound is preferably 0.8-1.5 equivalent based on the dihalogenated thiophene.
