NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is 2-18C alkyl; R<2> is 1-20C alkyl, alkyloxy, H, halogen or cyano; A is -COO- or -OCO-; B and C are both single bond, formula II, formula III (X is H, halogen or cyano), etc.; l, m and n are 0 or 1]. EXAMPLE:(S)-3-Cyano-4-(2'-methylbutyl)benzoic acid 4-octyloxy-4'-biphenyl ester. USE:A liquid crystal display element which is a chiral crystal composition having an optically active group and capable of constituting a light switching element by using the composition. The aimed compound is a liquid crystal compound having large value of spontaneous polarization. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula IV is brominated in the presence of a catalyst and the brominated compound is then reacted with phenols is order to carry out esterification to afford a compound expressed by formula V, which is then reacted with a cyanidating agent to give the compound expressed by formula I.
