NEW MATERIAL:1-(3-Vinylphenyl)-1-phenylethylene expressed by formula I. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for alpha-(3-benzoylphenyl)propionic acid (trade name: ketoprofen) useful as a medicine, such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent. The above-mentioned compound is prepared from the compound expressed by formula I passing through alpha-[3-(1-phenylethenyl)phenyl]propionic acid or an alkyl ester thereof. PREPARATION:Acetophenone is reacted with m-vinylphenylmagnesium bromide that is a Grignard reagent to provide 1,1-(3-vinylphenyl)phenylethyl alcohol expressed by formula II, which is then subjected to dehydration reaction in the presence of potassium hydrogensulfate to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
