Process for producing machineable ceramic

Ceramics produced by the process of the present invention do not have the disadvantages of conventional ceramics which can be machined only with relative difficulty and whose use on a larger scale is ruled out despite the great hardness and the excellent abrasion (wear) resistance. A remarkably good machineability is achieved by the addition of a specified iron content to pure aluminium oxide. Although this process reduces the hardness, the abrasion resistance and the physical strength remain in an acceptable range. The good machineability is achieved according to the invention without adverse effects on the properties and advantages of the ceramic, apart from the heat resistance. <IMAGE>
