PURPOSE:To permit exact measurement of the size of an object and the distance between the objects by disposing plural or continuous indices which are different in the positions in the direction along an optical axis for illumination or varying the spacing in the optical axis direction between the index and a positive lens system for illumination. CONSTITUTION:For example, 3 pieces of the indices 24a, 24b, 24c which are different in the positions in the optical axis direction are disposed between a single fiber 10 and the positive lens 30 for illumination which are constituted to permit sharp imaging of any of the indices in an extremely wide range of an observable range, so that the size of the object or the distance between the objects can be exactly measured. An index plate 32 inscribed or colored with a continuous index 32a in the axial direction of the illumination is otherwise provided to the endoscope, then the measurement can be made by imaging any part thereof on the object at all times. Furthermore, the measurement by using the movable index plate 34 having one index 34a or movable positive lens 20 for illumination and varying the imaging position of the index image 34a' in the optical axis direction is also feasible.
