Increased thickness for the center two coils (22, 24) of an overrunning clutch spring (16) is achieved by gradually increasing the lead a few degrees before and after the central crossover point (25). This affects the centrifugal balance of the spring (16) less than an abrupt increase in thickness at the crossover point (25).
