PURPOSE:To attain a display hyphened with the same format as a printing format by deciding the divided state of a word expressed by using characters arrayed on two rows as factors in the case of displaying words and displaying read storage document by using a hyphen. CONSTITUTION:A key code inputted to an input part 1 is outputted to an MPU 2. The MPU 2 scans character data by one row, and if the final character of the row is on the way of a word, reads out a bit of hyphen position information by referring a hyphen position storing part 3b. The MPU 2 decides whether a hyphen can be inserted or not, and when it is possible, inserts a hyphen character into the position concerned and transfers a character string from the row head of a display part up to the hyphen character to a display buffer 7 through a display control part 5. The character string stored in in the buffer 7 is displayed on a display part 6 and the succeeding row also is similarly processed by expressing the head of undisplayed data as the character next to the hyphen. Consequently, display with the same format as printing format can be attained.
