A large umbrella comprises a mast (2), which is provided with a foot, tensioning rods (4), which are attached at angular intervals relative to one another distributed around the mast (2) and are pivotable in radial planes, holding ribs (6) to support the tensioning rods (4), and a covering (8; 9) which is fixed at least at the free ends of the tensioning rods (4). In order to permit the umbrella to be opened out without relatively great effort, the holding ribs (6) are attached to an upper distributor (7) which is arranged fixedly on the mast (2) in the upper region thereof. The tensioning bars (4) are attached to a lower distributor (5) which is guided so as to be longitudinally displaceable on the mast, the displacement path of the lower distributor being bounded at the bottom in such a way that, in the lowest position of the lower distributor (5), in which the umbrella is opened out, the tensioning rods (4) are arranged horizontally. <IMAGE>
