PURPOSE:To attain efficient facsimile communication by comparing a data quantity sent actually with a received memory capacity prior to data communication. CONSTITUTION:The reception side compares a maximum capacity m-byte of one page sent from a sender side with a capacity k-byte of an area usable in a picture memory at the receiver side and returns a disconnecting command DCN to the sender in the case of m>n because of disabled reception. Further, the receiver side returns a reception preparation confirming signal CFR in the case of m<k. The sender side judges whether the response signal is DCN or CFR and sends a line disconnection instruction to a communication control section 8 in the case of the DCN and awaits the detection of the communication end at the section 8 and is in standby state when the communication is finished. Moreover, in detecting the CFR, the sender side sends picture data equivalent to three pages in a picture memory 4.
