PURPOSE:To remove an error, etc., of a voltage conversion and transmission system and to obtain a converting device which is free from blooming, etc., by counting the digital signal of a light input from the counted value obtained by counting charges which are photodetected and stored in a sampling period by an unit potential well. CONSTITUTION:This device consists of a potential well 102, potential barriers 104 and 105, the unit potential well 106, a sensing amplifier 110, a counter 114, a latch 115, etc. The well 106 counts how many times the well 102 which has constant capacity is filled with stored charges by the incident light 101, i.e. the stored charge amount of the well 102. Its counted value is held by the latch 115 and outputted as a digital value. Consequently, the need for a transmission system for transmission to an external A/D converter is eliminated, so the charges are not affected by the error, noises, etc., of the voltage conversion and transmission system and the generation of blooming and a smear is evaded.
