A support, e.g. of paper, is coated in order with (a) a subbing layer comprising (i) a pigment, preferably oil-absorbent, e.g. kaolin, (ii) a binder and (iii) a sterically hindered phenol having an alkyl at the ortho position or a sterically hindered amine; (b) a heat-sensitive color-forming layer, and (c) optionally a protective layer. General formulae are given for the phenol or amine (iii). Local heating with a thermal head gives an image of good color density and dot reproducibility.
