PURPOSE:To obtain a device having excellent optical characteristics by forming oriented film layers respectively on the opposite surfaces of a pair of substrates for sandwiching a liquid crystal of an electrooptic device for which a ferroelectric liquid crystal is used and subjecting the two faces of the oriented layers to rubbing treatments of prescribed angles so that the growth of disclination does not reach picture elements. CONSTITUTION:The upper and lower substrates 1, 1' for sandwiching the ferroelectric liquid crystal 4 are disposed to the electrooptic device for which said liquid crystal 4 is used. The oriented film layers 3, 3' having electrodes 2, 2' are formed on the substrates 1, 1'. The layers 3, 3' are sealed by a spacer 5 therebetween and the liquid crystal 4 is sealed therein. The upper substrate 1 is subjected to the rubbing 11 at the angle theta clockwise with respect to the picture element direction near the spacer 5 on the side where a sealing port 9 for sealing the liquid crystal 4 exists and the lower substrate 1' is subjected to the rubbing 12 at the angle theta clockwise with respect to the picture elements so that the picture elements 8 are not affected by the disclination generated from the upper and lower substrates 1, 1'.
