Device for generating and visibly displaying patterns, which is composed of an enclosed container which is at least partly transparent and is filled with a liquid and a granular substance which sinks into the liquid. Patterns are produced during sinking and deposition and in the rest condition. In the viewing area of the observer there is arranged a decorative element inside or outside the container, which element attains a vertical position under the force of gravity and/or owing to its buoyancy, independently of the sinking and deposition of the granular substance. <IMAGE>
