In a valve actuating arrangement for internal combustion engines with a plurality of valves of the same type for each cylinder a cross member is provided for the common actuation of all valves of the same type. The cross member has a number of separate sliding pieces corresponding to the number of valves, which pieces on the one hand directly interact with a respective control cam and on the other hand interact directly with the valves by way of a hydraulic clearance adjusting element arranged in the cross member. Due to this direct valve operating mechanism the cross member may advantageously be designed as part of a fork lever formed from a light alloy material.
