A container for receiving spheres of equal size, in which the bottom and/or walls have clearly reproducible order specifications which occur as layers within the hexagonally closest sphere packing of the type AB, has a maximum accommodation capacity as a result of the automatically occurring state of order. The bottom and/or walls are expediently structured with periodically arranged depressions, ribs or grooves or sloping faces which inevitably bring about an arrangement of the spheres in layers during filling in a square and/or rectangular grid arrangement with a grid spacing D (in the case of the square grid) or D and D . 2<1/2 > (in the case of the rectangular grid), D being the diameter of the spheres including maximum production tolerances.
