Alkanoic acid alkyl esters of the formula I R<1>-CO-O-R<2> I in which R<1> represents a linear alkyl group having 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 or 17 carbon atoms and R<2> represents a linear alkyl group having 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18 carbon atoms, are used in aqueous emulsion as adjuvants for antigens or for the modulation of an immune response.
