PURPOSE:To automatically set an optimum reproducing level based on subcode information at the time of reproducing by recording peak value information in the recording start part of a recorded audio signal as subcode information at the time of terminating recording. CONSTITUTION:When recording is terminated, a magnetic tape is rewound up to the recording start part of the recorded audio signal and digital data corresponding to the peak value of the audio signal detected by a peak value detecting and storing circuit 19 is supplied to a subcode encoder 74 and is recorded in the recording start part of the recorded audio signal as subcode information. At the time of reproducing, peak value information corresponding to a maximum value of the recorded audio signal is detected by a subcode decoder 144 and peak value information is converted to an analog control signal by a peak value decoder 20 and is supplied to attenuators 211 and 212. Thus, quantities of attenuation of attenuators 211 and 212 are set to optimum values based on peak value information.
