PURPOSE:To faithfully recognize an area even if plural closed loops exist in an original, by causing one line quantity of statuses indicating whether blocks indicating reading units respectively exist in closed loops or outside the loops and successively updating the statuses whenever the succeeding blocks are read. CONSTITUTION:Picture signals outputted from a reading section 13 color- separate closed loop-like marks drawn with an aimed color at a color separating section 14. The marks are supplied to an area discriminating section 16 as mark information 15. Moreover, ordinary picture information 17, such as characters, etc., written on an original 11 are supplied to a processing section 18. The section 16 causes a memory 21 to store statuses over one line and performs area recognition of a closed loop by discriminating statuses of blocks and successively updating stored contents by using the statuses of the blocks of the preceding line and blocks positioned in the circumference whenever one block is read. Area discriminated results are supplied to the processing section 18 and, after the picture information 17 is processed in accordance with a previously instructed processing mode, further supplied to a printing section 20 and printing of processed pictures is carried out.
