PURPOSE:To reduce the power required for washing when a packing material bed is clogged by using a mixture of the granular material floating in water to be treated and the granular material sinking in the water as the materials constituting the packing material bed. CONSTITUTION:The packing material 4 with adherent microbes on the surface is packed in a vessel 1 to form the packing material bed 8. The water to be treated is charged into the packing material bed from a raw water pipe 9, and biologically treated. A mixture of the granular material 4A floating in the water to be treated and having >=0.9 sp.gr. and the material 4B sinking in the water to be treated and having <=1.1 sp.gr. is used as the packing material 4. As a result, the power required for washing when the packing material bed is clogged can be reduced, the temporary deterioration in the quality of the treated water immediately after the washing is prevented to the utmost, and the quality of the treated water can be stabilized.
