NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystal compound expressed by formula I [R1 is 2-10C alkyl; m and n are 1 or 2; R2 is 1-10C alkyl; formula II indicates asym metric carbon of (R)- or (S)-absolute configuration; formula III indicates asymme tric carbon atom of (SO-configuration]. EXAMPLE:4-[ (S)-2-Propyloxypropanoyloxy ]phenyl 4'-(1-methylheptyloxy)biphe nyl-4-carboxylate. USE:Useful as one component of liquid crystal compositions, particularly as a liquid crystal material with ferroelectricity, having excellent responsiveness and memory properties, chemically stable to light, moisture, heat, etc., and promising as an optical switching element for display. PREPARATION:For example, a carboxylic acid expressed by formula II is converted into an acid chloride, which is then reacted with a lactic acid deriva tive expressed by formula III in the presence of a basic substance to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
