PURPOSE:To eliminate the need to provide an ID field in a document by selecting format control information automatically according to the size of the document. CONSTITUTION:A decision device 3 reads lateral widths X1, X2...Xn and longitudinal widths Y1, Y2...Yn by a scanner, etc., to decide the size of the document. The document 1 whose document size is decided by the document size decision device 3 is sent to a data recognition device 6 to read data on the document. Further, an output device 7 performs specific output processing based upon the read result. Here, the document size information read by the document size decision device 3 is inputted to a format control information selecting device 4, which outputs format selection information corresponding to the document size to a format control information storage device 5. Consequently, the document can be read without providing any ID field in the document.
