NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is alkoxyphenyl; R<2> and R<3> are lower alkyl; A is straight-chain alkylene; the asterisk mark indicates asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:5-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-(4-octyloxyphenyl)pyrimidine. USE:A liquid crystal compound. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II or salt thereof is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III, reactive derivative thereof or salt thereof in a solvent, such as water, alcohol, THF or DMSO, in the presence of a base, such as alkali metal (bi)carbonate, trimethylamine or pyridine, to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The reaction can be carried out while cooling or heating without particularly limiting reaction temperature.
