PURPOSE:To obtain a high-quality carbon black at low cost, by cooling in steps a crude coke oven gas produced in coal carbonization, separately recovering a specified tar then collected, and dehydrating the tar for use as a raw material oil. CONSTITUTION:A crude coke oven gas produced in coal carbonization in a coke oven is cooled in steps. Among the condensed tars, the one collected by cooling and separating units, such as a cooler and a dust collector, after a suction main is recovered separately from the tar condensed between a dry main and the suction main. The former tar is then dehydrated and used as a raw material oil to manufacture carbon black according to a conventional method, thus giving an objective carbon black. This dehydrated tar can be used in combination with a carbon oil obtained by distillation of coal tar or with a raw material oil for carbon black, obtained by thermal cracking of a petroleum distillation residue.
