After a web 22 (Fig. 1) has been clamped over the rim of a container 4 and heat sealed to the rim by a sealing head 5, it is cut around the container by a knife 19 resiliently connected, either with the sealing head or with the support for the container, to be operated by continued movement of the actuating means for the clamping and sealing, after the remaining parts have been brought to rest. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the operations are performed by a ram 6 and springs 16. The clamping is effected by a ring 10. The knife 19 may be heated, and may serve simultaneously to trim the rim of the container. The knife may be mounted below the web, becoming effectve to cut the web when the container 4 is depressed by the sealing head. The sealing face 7 may be impulse-heated. When the contents 29 (Fig. 3, not shown) of the container 2 protrude from the mouth of the container, the web 22 may first be clamped between members 31, 32 before these are lowered to stretch the web over the container mouth. The containers may be mounted in pockets in a rotary table which conveys them beneath the sealing station. The proper lengths of web may be intermittently fed as described in Specification 1,075,781.</p> |
