PURPOSE:To prevent an engine from knocking, by computing an ignition timing during change-over of the compression ratio in accordance with an actual compression ratio. CONSTITUTION:Required ignition timings for upper and lower limits of a range in which the compression ratio of an engine may be changed are set in a means 3 in accordance with an operating condition of an engine. A computing means 5 computes an ignition timing during change-over of the compression ratio with the use of an actual compression ratio detected by an actual compression ratio detecting means 4 and the required ignition timings. Further, an output means 7 delivers an ignition signal in accordance with thus computed ignition timing to an ignition device 6. If the ignition timing is set in accordance with the actual compression ratio, the accuracy of the computation of the ignition timing during change-over of the compression ratio is never affected by tolerances or the like of component parts, irrespective of variation in the response of the compression ratio, since all variations in the compression ratio are directly detected.
