PURPOSE:To measure a position with high accuracy by reading specific bits of a memory wheel code in parallel, and comparing the read outputs with the output of a shift register which generates an M-series signal in order corresponding to the angle of rotation of a code disk. CONSTITUTION:A position detection part 1 reads an M code corresponding to the absolute position of the code disk and inputs it to a comparator 4 as a parallel signal. Further, a reference M-code signal generating circuit 3 which includes the shift register 3S outputs a reference M code, which is inputted to the comparator 4. When both inputs of the comparator 4 become equal to each other, the output of a flip-flop 6 is inverted and a two-phase signal outputted by the two-phase signal detection part of a position detection part 1 is outputted from a selection part 7. The absolute position and incremental position are measured by counting the output of the selecting circuit 7.
