PRODUCTION OF MONO-AND/OR DIALKYLNAPHTHALENE

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance in high conversion, by alkylating naphthalene and/or an alkylnaphthalene with an alpha-olefin in the presence of a faugasite zeolite and a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:The titled substance can be produced by alkylating naphthalene and/or an alkylnaphthalene with an alpha-olefin (e.g. propylene or ethylene) in the presence of a faujasite zeolite (preferably Y-type zeolite) and a saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon (e.g. decalin or bicyclohexyl) at 160-400 deg.C under pressure of >=0.5kg/cm<2>G. High conversion of the raw material can be achieved by the above process and the life of the catalyst can be remarkably prolonged by the presence of the saturated alicyclic hydrocarbon. The process gives high production ratio of beta-alkylnaphthalene and 2,6- or 2,7-diisopropylnaphthalene.
