PURPOSE:To aim at improvement in the exhaust gas, the fuel consumption characteristics and the like through inhibiting knockings from occurring even when gasoline is fed by injection directly into a cylinder by providing a fuel injection valve for directly injecting gasoline towards an exhaust valve. CONSTITUTION:A main injector 22 is placed so that it fronts on a space in cylinder 13 in an engine 1 provided with an exhaust valve 15, and points in the direction of the exhaust valve 15, and then, towards the exhaust valve 15, gasoline is directly injected. Thereby, the neighborhood of the exhaust valve 15 is cooled efficiently, and the resistance to knocking can be improved. In addition, since all the latent heat of vaporization of fuel is utilized effectively within the space in cylinder 13, the intake air is cooled sufficiently to improve the charging efficiency, and consequently, the power output characteristics and the fuel consumption can be improved.
