At the lower end of the pipe inserted in the borehole is a renewable sealing mechanism, (14) whilst at its upper end is supported a heavy counterweight (3) and a release (1) which acts as an impulse reflector when a cartridge is exploded. In accordance with the arrangement the breaking force is produced at the lower end of the borehole. The pressing together process which inhibits breaking and which occurs with customary downwardly directed wedge driving is avoided and is replaced instead by an outwards and upwards directed effective breaking effect.
