PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent image even when the density range of a photographic print is large by picking up the photographic print in the presence of lighting from both or either of reflection lighting sources and a transmission lighting source by a image pickup device according to the density range of the photographic print. CONSTITUTION:A light beam A1 from the transmission lighting source 5c is transmitted through the base 1a and emulsion layer 1b from the reverse surface of the photographic print 1 and emitted out. A light beam A2 from reflection lighting sources 5a and 5b, on the other hand, is transmitted through the emulsion layer 1b from the top surface of the photographic print 1, diffuse-reflected by the border surface of the base 1a, and transmitted through the emulsion layer 1b and emitted out. In this case, the photographic print is picked up by the image pickup device in the presence of both or either of the reflection lighting sources and transmission lighting source according to the density range of the photographic print. Consequently, an excellent image which is reproduced faithfully from its highlight part to its shadow part is obtained.
