PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of a document sheet feed device without any pickup failure by providing a means for detecting whether document sheets have passed a separator. CONSTITUTION:A level difference (h) between a separator 10 and a document 3 is made large enough. First, a motor 13 turns a pick roller 2 for the predetermined time. Then, when it has been detected that the document 3 is not yet at a sensor 'A', a controller 14 turns another motor 15 and lowers the separator 10 by a fine distance (or height 'h') via a crank 16. Thereafter, the pick roller 2 is turned for the predetermined time, thereby detecting whether the document 3 has reached the sensor 'A'. If the document 3 has been detected, a separation process starts. If the document has not been detected, the aforementioned operation is repeated several times, thereby enabling the feed of the document 3 without any pickup failure.
