The protection device, which can be used especially on a trimming machine, includes a protective screen 16 which can be moved with respect to the bed of the machine between a position in which it prevents the operator from gaining access to the cutting member 14 and a position in which it allows intervention on this member. The screen carries metal proximity detectors and surface proximity detectors diffusing light, associated in a circuit for maintaining the supply of the electric drive motor, the sensors being grouped together in several mountings, at least one of which conducts for each working configuration in which the screen provides the desired protection. <IMAGE>
