PURPOSE:To attain the high speed character recognition of a simple processing by utilizing the center of gravity and obtaining a normalized divided area length sequence being characteristic information from the distribution of the number of black bits on prescribed axes. CONSTITUTION:A first detection means 4 detects the subscribing frame of a character pattern, and a generation means generates the distribution of the number of black bits in the direction of respective axes. A second detection means 6 detects the coordinate sequence of a center of gravity in the direction of respective axes based on the obtained subscribing frame and the distribution of respective number of black bits, and a deciding means 7 decides a division coordinate sequence in the direction of respective axes. A calculation means 8 calculates the sequence of a divided area length (divided area length sequence) in the direction of respective axes in which the length of the area of the subscribing frame that is divided in the decided division coordinate sequence is regulated by the length of the subscribing frame in the direction of corresponding axis. A recognition means 9 collates to the normalized divided area length sequence and the divided area length sequence of a standard pattern and outputs the category name of the standard pattern concerned as a character pattern. Thus, a character pattern can speedily be recognized.
