The invention relates to an illuminating device for a dental treatment apparatus, which has a tool at one end of a hand piece which is preferably constructed to be in the form of a rod or a cylinder, and which can be electrically controlled from a supply and/or control device via a supply tube which is connected to the other end of the hand piece via a coupling device, the illuminating device having at least one light source in the form of a light-generating electrical element. The invention is distinguished in that the at least one light source is provided on the coupling device in such a manner that the light output of the light source is in the region of the end of the handpiece which has the tool.
