The invention describes a method and an apparatus for fitting hoses, especially also slack hoses, which allows fitting suitable for mass production, with a short fitting time for hoses of different dimensions (length, diameter, shape) and with two or more hose ends (branched hose). After the first hose end has been fixed, it is possible to fit the second or further hose ends suspended freely in space to connection pieces. For this purpose, there are provided devices for the provision of hose clips, and furthermore corresponding devices for the slack hoses themselves. To fix the position of the hose ends, there are measuring devices which are attached to the gripper and which monitor the gripping and joining operation, in that they measure the presence of the hose, the gripper force, the position of the gripper jaws, the joining travel and the slip of the hose in the gripper and make corrections via corresponding regulating devices.
