PURPOSE:To produce the title fibers including giant voids which can expand in the fiber axis direction, partially open on the side surface of the fiber and has a certain range of void area in the fiber cross section, thus being used in gradual release of chemicals or medicaments such as fertilizers or giving fiber products of high heat-retaining properties. CONSTITUTION:An acrylic fiber including 3 or more giant voids 2 which partially open on the side surface of the fiber 1 and are insubstantial connection and, when needed, fine voids 3 of generally less 0.5mu sizes. The area of the giant voids is more than 5% in the fiber cross section and the moisture retention and water absorption of the fiber is more than 150% and preferably more than 40% respectively. For example, an acrylic copolymer (containing more than 50wt.% of acrylonitrile and the rest of other unsaturated monomers) is dissolved in a solvent such as DMF in a concentration of less than 80% and wet-spun using a cross-shaped or polylobal nozzle to give the title fibers.
